Week 1 (25 January):           Comments on the exam and learning strategy. Diversity of microbial metabolisms (CWM)

 

Week 2 (1 February):           Microbial diversity, and bacterial growth and replication (CWM)

 

Week 3 (8 February):           Organisation and division of the bacterial chromosome (CE)

 

Week 4 (15 February):         Signalling and gene regulation in bacteria (CE)

 

Week 5 (22 February):         Motile and sessile lifestyles in bacteria (CE)

 

Week 6: (29 February):        Host-microbe interactions: symbiosis and infection from plants

to humans (CE)

 

Week 8: (14 March)              Modes of metabolism: chemoorganotrophy and fermentation (CWM)

 

Week 9: (21 March):            Modes of metabolism: anaerobic respiration, denitrification and sulphate reduction (CE)

 

Week 10: (28 March):          Modes of metabolism: chemolithotrophy (CWM)

 

Week 11: (4 April):               Modes of metabolism: photolithotrophy and photoorganotrophy (CWM)   

 

Week 12: (11 April):             General feedback and revision session (CWM/CE)

                                   

                                               

A practical class will take place in week 12 (8 April, Fogg 1.01), with a three-hour session for each student followed by a post-practical calculation exercise. Marks from the practical report and online exercise will constitute the coursework component of the module (25% of marks).
