This module investigates the role of social and environmental factors in psychopathology and psychological wellbeing across the life span. These factors include prenatal influences, immediate social context (i.e., parenting), wider social context (i.e., neighbourhood quality), socio-economic context, adverse life events such as exposure to war and displacement, as well as cultural factors. Students will learn about developmental theories of mental health and wellbeing, as well as the varied methodological approaches used in developmental science. The module applies a life course perspective and considers social and environmental influences across multiple systems and contexts, with links highlighted to genetics and neuroscience. Students will learn to differentiate causal and correlational associations between environmental factors and developmental outcomes. Finally, the module will feature an applied focus, covering interventions that have been developed to promote positive development.
