The module runs over two semesters and is divided into three parts: Research Foundations (semester A, weeks 1-6), The Politics and Practice of Research (Semester A, weeks 8-12) and Research Methods (Semester B). Research Foundations provides an advanced level introduction to completing theoretical traditions and epistemologies in human geography. The seminars focus on influential approaches, perspectives and debates in geography, each involving the close reading of particular texts. The Politics and Practice of Research explores the process and practicalities of research design, including literature reviews and critical writing, research ethics, activism and public geographies. Research Methods introduces and provides training in a variety of methodologies through a combination of lectures, workshops and practical classes. It covers qualitative and quantitative methods including social surveys, GIS, interviewing, participant observation, participatory action research, visual methodologies and archival research.
