The primary aim of this course is to provide MA students with an advanced introduction to the range of research theories and methodologies in linguistics through a detailed overview of the research programmes and expertise of all linguistics permanent staff. This will ensure that all MA students have an opportunity to interact with staff, and become familiar with the full range of research that is conducted in the department, allowing students to:
1. start to become familiar with postgraduate level research in linguistics through hands-on exposure to real ongoing projects in all major areas of the field;
2. make informed choices about the kinds of topics they wish to pursue further in the second semester and in their dissertation work, and
3. begin establishing relationships with potential supervisors from the beginning of their degrees.
