It is widely accepted that Britain has experienced a series of profound changes across its economic, social, cultural and political landscapes. This module examines some of the key elements of this reinvention and change within Britain, primarily since the 1970s, in the context of an increasingly inter-connected world. It explores a range of topics associated with this change, including: Britain’s long-standing North-South divide; the uneven geographies of deindustrialisation and crisis; place-based competition and new forms of urban regeneration, and the social and political geographies of Britain’s transition. These topics will be discussed in the context of geographical concerns with place, space and scale, and with an explicitly regional focus on the North West of England. The module will be delivered through lectures and field teaching, culminating in a compulsory field trip to Liverpool.
