Citation of a Thesis: Advice

A first reference to a thesis or dissertation should include the following information:

  1. Author's name (followed by a comma)
  2. Title of thesis (in single quotation marks, not italicised)
  3. Details of 'Production' (enclosed in parentheses):
    • The degree level (prefaced by the word unpublished, followed by a comma)
    • The name of the university (followed by a comma)
    • The year of award
  4. Page number(s) (preceded by 'p.' or 'pp.'; followed by a full stop)

For instance:

Kate Harris, ‘Ownership and Readership: Studies in the Provenance of the Manuscripts of Gower’s Confessio Amantis’ (unpublished DPhil thesis, University of York, 1993), p. 10.
Or:
Stephanie Hovland, ‘Apprenticeship in Later Medieval London, c.1300-c.1530’ (unpublished PhD thesis, Royal Holloway, University of London, 2006), p. 101.
