Citation of a Newspaper Article: Advice

A first reference to a newspaper article should include the following information:

  1. Name of the author of the article (in full, followed by a comma)
  2. Title of article (in full, in single quotation marks, followed by a comma)
  3. The title of the newspaper (in full, in italics, followed by a comma. )
  4. Day, month and year of publication (not in parentheses, in the form 31 August 2012)
  5. [Where relevant] The section of the paper in which it appears (preceded and followed by a comma)
  6. Page number(s) (in the usual format)

For example:

Michael Schmidt, ‘Tragedy of Three Star-Crossed Lovers’, Daily Telegraph, 1 February 1990, p. 14.
Or
Charlie Brooker, 'I Hate Macs', Guardian, 5 February 2007, G2 section, p. 11.

Note: When giving the titles of English-language newspapers or magazines, you should omit an initial The or A, except in the case of The Times which keeps its The.
