What is EchoVideo (Q‑Review)?

EchoVideo (Q‑Review) is Queen Mary’s video platform for teaching, used to record lectures and create, manage, and share video content with students.

It enables you to deliver lecture capture, upload or produce teaching materials, and provide students with access to recordings and supporting media through QMplus. It also supports video-based assessment, allowing students to submit video assignments as part of their coursework. The platform includes tools for editing recordings and organising your media content.

Why EchoVideo is Important for Staff and Students

EchoVideo (Q‑Review) plays an important role in supporting both teaching and learning.

For staff, it provides a reliable way to record lectures, create and share teaching materials, and support flexible delivery. It also enables video-based assessment, giving you more options for how students can present and submit their work.

For students, EchoVideo offers easy access to lecture recordings and course videos, allowing them to revisit key concepts, learn at their own pace, and catch up on missed content. It also supports the development of digital skills through creating and submitting video assignments.

Overall, EchoVideo helps make teaching more flexible and accessible, while supporting student engagement and understanding

Understanding Your EchoVideo (Q-Review) Library

EchoVideo (Q-Review) provides several areas to help you find, manage, and share recordings and media. These support both your teaching and content organisation.

Library

Your Library is your personal media space.

  • This is where you will find recordings that you own or that have been shared directly with you
  • You can review, organise, and manage your media content here

Collections

Collections are shared groups of media that you can create or join.

  • You can create Collections to organise content or share recordings with colleagues
  • This is useful for collaboration, peer review, or shared teaching materials

Please note: Teaching recordings are normally shared through Courses, not Collections.

Courses

Each QMplus module (course area) is linked to a corresponding Course in EchoVideo.

What this includes

  • Lecture recordings
    • Automatically published when the module is scheduled and connected
  • Additional media
    • Videos and recordings uploaded by staff
  • Module content
    • Organised in one place for student access

In simple terms

A Course is the main video area for a QMplus module.

Classes

Within each EchoVideo Course, there is a Class linked to the QMplus module.

Key point
  • Each QMplus site has a corresponding EchoVideo class
What classes are used for
  • Holding lecture recordings (each session)
  • Supporting interactive activities
  • Enabling video assignment workflows when integrated with QMplus
How it works with QMplus
  • Students access EchoVideo through QMplus links
  • These links take them to the correct class for that module
  • Any activity (such as viewing or submitting video) happens within that class
In simple terms

A Class is the space where recordings and activities for a QMplus module take place.

Key Difference
  • Course = overall module video area
  • Class = the active space within it where recordings and activities happen

There are two main ways you can record:

Universal Capture: Personal

A downloadable application you can install on your computer to record your screen, webcam, or both. You will need to raise a ticket to request this.

Browser Capture

A web-based option that lets you record directly through your browser without installing additional software.

  • Important: You must be signed in to QMplus or EchoVideo (Q-Review)with your QMUL email address to view this guidance video.

These tools are useful for creating screencasts, recording presentations, or producing videos for assignments and independent study.

Read information on Browser Capture from the provider.

Source file

You can download the original source file from EchoVideo. This may be useful for several reasons:

  • To edit the recording using external video editing software
  • To keep a backup copy for archiving or storage
  • To upload the video to another platform or website
  • To reuse clips in future teaching materials or presentations
  • To improve audio, captions, or visual quality before republishing
  • To share the recording offline where internet access may be limited
  • To keep a local copy for use in future academic years

Important: You must be signed in to QMplus or EchoVideo (Q-Review)with your QMUL email address to view this guidance video.

Downloading Source Video
  1. Open your video in your EchoVideo (Q-Review) library.
  2. Select Details.
  3. In the Details panel, choose Source.
  4. Select the option to download the source file.

The source file is the original, unedited version of your recording.

Downloading the file does not affect your video in EchoVideo (Q-Review), and the source file will remain available.

Embedding and sharing EchoVideo content

There are several ways to share EchoVideo content with students and colleagues, depending on how you want the material to be accessed.

  • Embed a single video in QMplus
Use the EchoVideo icon in the text editor to embed an individual video directly into your course page. This is useful when the video supports specific content or activities.

  • Embed a playlist in QMplus
Playlists allow you to group multiple videos together and embed them in one place. This is helpful for organising lecture series or collections of related recordings.

  • Share using an external embed link
You can generate an external embed link to share EchoVideo content outside of QMplus, for example on websites or with external audiences.

This guide explains how to use each method effectively, so you can choose the best option for your teaching and communication needs.

Video Assignments

From 1 July 2026, EchoVideo (Q-Review) will replace Kaltura (QMplus Media) as the University’s video platform for video assignments. Video assignments will continue to be submitted using QMplus Assignment.

If your module uses video assignments, or if you are considering using them in the future, please explore this staff guide for further information.

You can also refer to the corresponding student guide for video assignments to better understand the student experience.

Lecture capture

Although EchoVideo offers a wide range of features, lecture capture remains one of its core uses.

Below, you’ll find key information to help you understand how lecture capture works and how to make use of it effectively.

There is also more detailed guidance available on the main website, which covers lecture capture in greater depth.

Are All Teaching Sessions Recorded?

Not all teaching sessions are recorded in EchoVideo (Q‑Review).

Recording depends on several factors, including the type of session and the approach taken by your department or faculty.

You may benefit from discussing the school approach to EchoVideo (Q‑Review), by talking to your local school learning technologist .QMplus Local School Contacts - Technology Enhanced Learning Team

Is Lecture Capture Set Up Automatically?

Lecture capture is not always automatic. Even in rooms where EchoVideo is available, recordings usually need to be scheduled through timetabling or agreed in advance. If you are unsure whether your teaching will be recorded, it is best to check with your department. For more information you can email qreviewbookings@qmul.ac.uk and timetabling@qmul.ac.uk.

Are All Teaching Spaces EchoVideo-Enabled?

Not all teaching spaces are equipped with EchoVideo. Only certain rooms have the technology required for lecture capture.

This is a list of all the current Q-Review Rooms across all campuses. - Technology Enhanced Learning Team

Using Lecture Capture Equipment Effectively
To support effective lecture capture, it is important to consider the recording while delivering your session, including how you use the available equipment.

Camera and visual capture
Be aware of how the camera is being used and what is visible in the recording.

Microphones and audio quality
Use the teaching space microphones clearly and consistently.
Good audio is essential for accurate transcripts and captions.

Lecture capture equipment
Make sure you are familiar with the equipment in the room. This includes understanding indicators such as EchoVideo (Q-Review) indicator light colours (e.g. red means recording) and ensuring everything is set up correctly before teaching.

Shared screens and content
Check which screen(s) you are sharing.
Ensure that only the intended content is visible in the recording.

We run Teaching Space Awareness sessions throughout the year to help you make the most of lecture capture.

We have also created a dedicated resource, which includes a handbook with practical guidance and useful tips to support high-quality recordings.

Accessing Lecture Recordings

To access recordings, you must be listed as an instructor for the session.

Getting access
After the recording is completed
  • Once you are listed as an instructor, you should receive an email notification when the recording becomes available

  • Recordings will appear in QMplus unless you choose to hide them
  • You can manage visibility within EchoVideo (Q-Review)

If you need help linking your QMplus course, please contact your school Learning Technologist.
