I would like to introduce you to our distance learning MSc/PGDip in Emergency and Resuscitation Medicine.

Resuscitation is an exciting & rapidly evolving area of medicine that involves AM, ICM , Anaesth, acute surg, PHC and EM. Indeed it may be argued that resus medicine is evolving into a sub-speciality drawn from these areas of specialization. For many of us it is the time in resus that makes our shifts exciting and fulfilling.  Resus involves a small proportion of the patient load in the ED but involves a great deal of clinician time and resources.  Getting the resus process right has profound impact on the mortality and well being of our patients. In this post graduate course we will bring together teaching on how to read papers, basic statistics, pathophysiology shock, diagnosis and management of shock & CA, an introduction to trauma, tools of resus, imaging including radiographs, computed tomography and POCUS, toxicology & PHC & mass casualty events (many of you work PHC but whether or not this applies to you, most of your patients have had care PH.)

Who is the course designed for?

This postgraduate course is designed for UK and overseas doctors, experienced paramedics and senior nurses with an interest in resuscitation. Much of the material will go beyond exit exams and we see completing the course as marking the student as having expert knowledge and an interest in resuscitation medicine. We believe it will appeal to doctors in the latter half of their training or specialists in EM/AM/ICM/Anaesth/acute care surgery looking to further develop their skills.

The MSc/PGDip will provide students with specialised knowledge to develop their careers within the clinical arena. The course will offer recently qualified specialists in acute care specialities an opportunity to develop a sub-speciality interest in resuscitation medicine. The course is also designed to provide a study framework for doctors training jointly in intensive care, and/or prehospital care and emergency medicine or who are taking a resuscitation fellowship, for who resuscitation will form a core component of their clinical work. It will provide an opportunity for doctors in training who enjoy the field resuscitation to develop their knowledge beyond that required from their training schemes. For senior nurses the course offers an opportunity to develop a knowledge base and assist in developing a skill set to take a leadership role in the resuscitation area of the ED. The course provides the knowledge to develop as a critical care paramedic or to develop the clinical care as part of a HEMS system.

How is the MSc/PGDip structured?

The MSc is delivered over 3 years and PGDip over 2 years. The structured teaching comprises 8 x 8 weekly modules over two years. Lectures are released on average at 2-5 per week with a weekly online tutorial where the module leads (and any guest lecturers that can attend) discuss the lectures and relevant cases with students. The MSc and PGDip comprises the same teaching material, but the MSc has an additional year.  In year 3 the student will complete a 3500 word scientific paper (with additional appendices) and 20 minute conference-level presentation.

Both the MSc and PGDip are delivered entirely online, so you can work at your own time and pace while continuing in your work. All students have access to QM resources. There is no need to visit the campus although some of you may choose to do so.

Queen Mary University of London is part of the Russell group and has a worldwide reputation for medical research and teaching. The medical school was recently rated no 2 in the UK (Guardian University Guide). Barts Health is home to 3 Emergency Departments with a combined census of around 1000 patients each day. It is home to London HEMS, Europe’s largest heart attack centre and Europe’s busiest Trauma centre.
