1. Building an effective search

Here we take an initial look at the first principles of putting together an effective search strategy that will produce the results you need. It pays to plan carefully and work methodically.

Building an effective literature search can be broken down into three discrete steps.

You should think about recording your component searches (i.e. the individual searches that make up your overall literature search) in a systematic way: whether you use a notebook or an electronic storage method, recording results captures essential details and saves you repeating work.
