Description
this is something that is done both for acute injuries to the globe, but is also part of a medical examination because there are manifestations of medical diseases which show in the eye.
there are some very straightforward things that you can do, simply looking at the eye, looking at the pupil size, looking for redness and checking the patient to move their eyes together is simple. it is also straightforward to check the visual acuity, this is normally done with a Snellen chart, and are even iPhone applications to achieve this.
Looking inside the eye is not. There are two levels, firstly the ophthalmoscope which is a very difficult clinical manoeuvre, and secondly referral to an ophthalmologist for use of a slit lamp. This is a piece of apparatus where the patient sits with his chin on a rest, the ophthalmologist faces them, and uses a microscope to see inside the eye.
It is of note that an ophthalmologist in Italy died by spread of conjunctiva virus.
