Objectives
At the end of this module course participants should be able to:
- List the bacteria commonly involved in skin infection
- Recognise the clinical features of common bacterial infections, including impetigo, cellulites, folliculitis, boils
- Recognise rarer bacterial infections such as staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, toxic shock syndrome, necrotising fasciitis
- Describe how to investigate a patient with suspected bacterial infection
- Formulate a management plan for a patient with a bacterial infection
- List the main viruses involved in skin disease
- Recognise the clinical features of common viral infections, including herpes simplex, varicella zoster, measles, rubella, viral warts, molluscum contagiosum
- Be able to counsel a pregnant woman who has had contact with chickenpox, rubella
- Describe the specific problems that viruses may cause in patients with eczema or the immunocompromised
- Discuss the treatment available for viral infections
- Recognise fungal infections of the skin including tinea
- Differentiate between fungal and yeast infections of the skin
- Be able to do a fungal skin scraping
- Discuss treatments available for fungal infectionÂ
