This module examines the role of composites in modern engineering. Starting from the introduction of composites materials with various examples in engineering applications, the manufacture of glass fibres, carbon fibres, aramid fibres, polyethylene fibres and extending to the manufacturing of polymers composites using processes including for example resin transfer moulding, compression moulding and pultrusion. In addition to fibre reinforced polymer composites, the module will also consider particulate filled composite materials and briefly on metal matrix and ceramic matrix composite materials. The module will cover the theory that is used to predict the stiffness and strength of composite components, with emphasis on exploring the roles of the three different components encountered in a composite materials of fibre (filler), matrix and the interface. State-of-the-art smart composites and nanocomposites will also be explored in this module.
